MEET

Ranju Ji

is the heart and soul of our Udaipur workshopā€”she quite literally keeps everything running smoothly! We speak almost daily, and her 18 years of experience in training women in embroidery shines through in every conversation. Ranju is not only an expert in her craft but also deeply committed to the power of education, believing it's the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Her two sons are a testament to this, as she has worked tirelessly in supporting them to become a Chartered Accountant and an Engineer.Ā

Ranjuā€™s practical approach, combined with her natural talent for pairing prints and refining the cuts of each design, makes her an invaluable part of our team. Her eye for detail and dedication ensure that every piece we create is beautifully crafted and thoughtfully executed.Ā

MEET

Master Ji

When we set out to find a master pattern maker, we were fortunate to discover Master Ji. Having worked for a renowned clothing brand in India, he was always striving to provide more for his family. However, when COVID hit Udaipurā€”where our workshop is basedā€”everything changed. As large manufacturers shut down, staff returned to their ancestral lands, and Master Ji was made redundant, left unpaid for three months of work.Ā

In July 2020, Master Ji joined us full-time, bringing with him a wealth of experience in pattern design, cutting, and garment manufacturing. His expertise has been instrumental in elevating our craftsmanship, and we are proud to have someone of his calibre on our team.

MEET

Makbul Bhai

was one of our very first tailors, introduced to us by Master Ji back in 2015. Since the beginning, Makbul has been an integral part of our team, initially handling both cutting and sewing. When Master Ji joined and took over the pattern cutting, Makbul focused his expertise on sewing, where his skill truly shines.Ā

With many years of experience working for some of Indiaā€™s top brands, Makbul brings a wealth of knowledge and craftsmanship to our workshop. His dedication have been key in helping us create the high-quality garments we're known for.Ā

In addition to his own work, Makbul has been instrumental in training the women in our workshop, passing on his expertise in tailoring and ensuring that each garment is crafted with the highest level of precision. His guidance has helped elevate the skills of our team, empowering them to become skilled artisans in their own right.Ā

MEET

Habib

is a quiet presence in the workshop, but certainly not shy. The past few years have been particularly tough for him, as he lost both his mother and his wife within 12 months of each other. Despite these personal hardships, Habib has continued to raise his three children on his own, all while never missing a single day of work.Ā

Often, you'll find him sewing garments while listening to old Hindi song on the radio. His strength and dedication are remarkable, but what truly stands out is his ability to keep the workshop atmosphere light. Known for playfully teasing the ladies about the latest sari trends, Habib brings a sense of joy and humour to the team.Ā

MEET

Pyari Ji

was one of our very first trainees, and her journey with us has been nothing short of inspiring. Despite raising three children under difficult circumstances, she has developed a range of valuable skills through her role at Tara and the Tigress, allowing her to support her family and thrive in her work.Ā

Most of the intricate buttons and tassels you see on our garments are crafted by Pyari Ji herself. She is also responsible for the essential task of quality checking each piece after stitching, removing loose threads, and keeping the tailors in line. Her attention to detail ensures that every item meets our high standards.Ā

Pyari Ji has also been a mentor to her daughter, Vinnie, who is now a full-time tailor with us. She passed down her knowledge in fabric care, ironing, and the ways of the workshop, helping Vinnie develop the skills she needs to succeed.Ā

One of Pyari Jiā€™s most memorable moments with us was when she cut her very first birthday cakeā€”a tradition uncommon in India. The joy on her face was unforgettable, and itā€™s these little moments that make our team feel like family.Ā

MEET

Ranjana Ji

joined our team in 2018 as a shy and timid young woman. She began her training by washing and ironing fabric bolts as they arrived from our suppliers, learning the essential foundations of garment care. From there, she progressed to ironing and stitching the long panels of our palazzo pants, mastering the delicate technique of the French seam.Ā

Today, Ranjana is a full-time tailor and a true success story of Tara and the Tigress. If you were to meet her now, youā€™d find a completely different person from the one who first stepped into our workshop. Her tailoring skills, health, confidence, self-authority, and education have all grown tremendously since she joined us. Last year, Ranjana was one of three women we trained in computer skills and English.Ā

Though she isnā€™t a tea drinker herself, Ranjana is known for brewing a mean chai, adding her own special touch to keep the workshop energised!Ā

MEET

Renu Ji

has a very sweet and gentle nature and is an invaluable support to Ranju Ji, serving as her right hand in the daily running of the workshop. From managing tasks to ensuring the smooth operation of our processes, Renu is always at the heart of the teamā€™s success.Ā

In addition to her workshop responsibilities, Renu Ji trains new trainees in stitching our packing bags and in our patchwork program, passing on her skills and experience to the next generation of artisans.Ā

One of the few women in the workshop who knows how to drive a scooter, Renu Ji has even taken on the role of teaching Ranju Ji how to drive, further showcasing her willingness to support and uplift those around her.Ā

MEET

Kamala Ji

Our latest team member, Kamala, has been on board for four years now, having joined us in 2020. She lives in a joint family, sharing a two-story house with her husband, his three brothers, and their families. Kamala has a beautiful smile and a warm presence. She is in charge of ironing washed bolts of fabric and making buttons and tassels. With her quiet demeanour, she efficiently goes about her tasks in the workshop. Her commitment to her craft and her cheerful spirit make her a cherished part of our team.

MEET

Vinnieā€™s

journey is one of our proudest achievements to date. As the youngest member of our team and the daughter of Pyari Ji, Vinnieā€™s story is a testament to resilience and growth. She left school in the 10th grade, but with our encouragement, she continued her education through correspondence.Ā

In 2020, Pyari Ji began bringing Vinnie to the workshop, as she didnā€™t want to leave her at home alone. Over the next four years, Vinnie underwent extensive training in every aspect of tailoring. Early in 2024, she proudly completed her training and is now a full-time tailor with us.Ā

As part of her training contract, a portion of her income was saved to support her dowry. This year, Vinnie and Pyari Ji demolished their small, single-room home and began constructing a new house. Vinnie has been able to use her savings from her training to contribute towards the construction of their new home. We are immensely proud of Vinnie; she truly symbolises what we are trying to achieve at Tara and the Tigress.Ā
